I have been using medium chicken grit for my ballast for some time now. It's made from Granite pieces. It works good, but is light in color.

I recently purchased some concrete stain, which is gray. I have started tinting the mix with black to create a dark gray to black look. I then dilute the mix, which for the stuff I purchased is pretty thick with about 50% water. Putting it in a pump sprayer, like an old Windex bottle, I can now spray it on the roadbed making it look pretty darn close to the dark greasy stone found next to the track in my area of the country. The farther away from the rail you get, the lighter the stone. Here is the link showing how it comes out.
